Motorway sticker fees in Europe

For road use European countries charge a variety of fees:

  • there are countries where motorway sticker is compulsory (such as Austria, Slovakia);
  • there are gate systems (e.g. France, Greece);
  • there are where only certain tunnels, bridges must be paid for (e.g. Denmark);
  • and there are also countries where there is no toll at all (e.g. Finland).

This article focuses on those European countries where we have to buy stickers for road usage.

But how much have to pay for a sticker?


Austria

The road toll is unified since  1. January 2015.

We have to buy stickers to use of motorways (A) major roads (S).

Motorway stickers for cars:

  • 10-day € 8.70
  • 60-day € 25,30
  • Annual € 84.40 (valid for 14 months)

Germany

Highway use for cars is free. Paid tunnels, however:

In each of the above countries the motorway sticker is mandatory. In the absence of it severe penalties can be expected.  In Austria, for example, if there is no sticker, we have to immediately pay an additional fee of € 120; and if we can’t pay on the spot we can expect fines of between € 300-
